First project in 2022, I got asked to paint a mural at Atlanta’s Carlos Museum. So I painted my son.
More pix and info available on ganzeer.com, and there’s also a recorded talk between curator Amanda Hellman and I all about it.
The Carlos Museum also holds a book club called Carlos Reads, and they’d all decided to read THE SOLAR GRID #1-5 while I was there. I got to join them for the book discussion, and was surprised to learn that this was the first comics reading experience for most of them, and they were all so very into it! I was thoroughly surprised by all the nuances they’d caught, even the purely visual ones. Needless to say, the discussion reinvigorated me to return to the series with a vengeance! Here’s a first look (sans backcover copy) at the cover art for the print edition of issue #6:
This one drops last week of June, I believe.
In the meantime, issues #1-5 can still be acquired through Mythomatic. Starting to run quite low on #1s though.
Speaking of book clubs, fellow Frequency Head Marcel is starting a Utopian Reading club over at Restricted.Academy, which I think is something we could all use a little of right now. It’s still early enough in the year to get in on this before our to-read piles get way out of hand, I think.
*Looks at to-read pile*.
I hope?
Walter Chaw, my best friend from my Denver days (which feels like a lifetime ago already), wrote a 464 page book on filmmaker Walter Hill (The Warriors, Red Heat, 48 Hrs. and more) and bestowed on me the honor of providing cover art and design:
Posters are available from Garage.Ganzeer (framed and unframed), and the book itself (which comes with an introduction by James Ellroy and a foreward by Larry Gross) dropping in Fall 2022 is now available for preorder.
Remember when I disappeared for over four months in the summer because I was working on a few murals that near destroyed me? Yeah, I have better pics of them now:
Restricted Radar
Badspace Comics: Out of New Zealand, comes Scott Base with expertly crafted 10-panel comics of meaningful sci-fi and beautiful (sometimes demented) contemplation.
ARTSpeak- David Mazzucchelli: Over one hour of David Mazzucchelli deep diving into the unique narrative mechanics of comics is pure gold.
How to Ink Comics Like Neal Adams: Although he’s addressing children, some of who have no idea what inking even is, Neal Adams imparts some real no bullshit wisdom and understanding.
As always, thanks for allowing me to invade your inbox. Hope this helps bring a spark to your weekend and beyond.
Talk to you next month,
